Couples and Respect Toward One Another

Notes From Dad

Couples and Respect Toward One Another

Sounds like a no brainer but the truth is, many couples disregard one another feelings and don’t even realize they are doing it. Respect is a vital part of your relationship; it’s an acknowledgement that you accept your partner's faults and they accept yours. This article will touch upon both respect and disrespect in a relationship. Let's look first at respect.

Respect between a couple means there is a mutual trust and a willingness to change. It's a sign of manners where you listen and be willing to help out in any type of situation. Some examples may be buying flowers or leaving flirty notes for one another; coming home from work and listening to your partner's day before you talk about yours; showing your manners by saying please and thank you and appreciating one another for their love and support in difficult situations.

Now to look at disrespect; disrespect has no place in any relationship. It builds a wall of mistrust, anger and resentment; it’s a life without having your feelings and emotions cared for. It’s living with a person who is rude and shows little or no empathy for you or dealings with people. Disrespectful may lie, cheat or steal; when upset, instead of listening and talking they give you the silent treatment and may at times show no interest in your feelings and they may always put him or herself first.

Finally, respect is a two way street, however, it starts with you. To get respect you need to show respect; you treat others the way you want to be treated; your partner will see how your mannerisms are and hopefully want to mirror them. Respect is a learned quality and shows your intentions of building your relationship with the common cores; love, happiness, safety and acceptance.

Good Luck !!
