Ready to propose?

Don’t put the cart before the horses. You shouldn’t be buying an engagement ring unless you know you’re going to use it. While you might want to get an engagement ring at the most affordable time of year, it won’t be of much use if you’re still unsure whether you want to propose.

There is a best time to buy an engagement ring, as we’ll get into, but you should only buy a ring once you’re ready to make the move.

Quick Questions to Ask Yourself

What’s their ring size?

Do you know your partner’s ring size? Don’t guess. Now is the time to put in the work. Grab your Inspector Clouseau cap and get to work. Measure their ring yourself, bring it to a jeweler for sizing, or ask them outright when they least expect it.

What do you want?

What’s your ideal ring look like? Now, are you buying it for yourself or your partner?

Hint: It should be for your partner. You should find a ring that captures your spirit, too, but it should especially be something that fits their style.

What’s your budget?

How much should you spend on an engagement ring? The average cost in 2020 was $5,500. Don’t worry if that sounds like it’s going to break your bank. You should get an engagement ring that fits your needs, too. We’ve heard of the old adage that a man should spend up to three months of their income on an engagement ring, but that can sound wild to many people. Do what works for you. If the ring looks great, it won’t matter what it costs.

Just don’t buy a grocery store Ring Pop.

Consider the Time of Year

January to March

Honestly, it’s best to avoid the beginning of the year. Not only do you have New Year’s engagements, but you also have Valentine’s Day—the premier day for proposals.

April to June

The late spring to early summer months are a decent time to get a ring. Flowers have already bloomed, the world is warming, and people are busy with work, prior to summer vacations. It’s a semi-desirable time to get an engagement ring.

July to September

This is your best time to get a ring. Go for it! Why? Not many people are proposing in late July, to be honest. But you should aim for July or August, as prices begin to rise again when September approaches—blame it on the idyllic autumn proposals.

October to December

This is a so-so time to get an engagement ring. You can still buy a ring during this time, but it’s not the most ideal. The reason? It’s because of the number of people that like to get engaged during the fall months, around Thanksgiving, or during the Christmas season.

But you might be able to get a deal on Black Friday. So shop around and look for a steal.
