Communication in a relationship.
Notes From Dad
Whether you are dating or married the art of communicating is a very important part of a relationship. Some folks communicate through their eyes, some through their body and some through words, whatever your choice, it is important to communicate your feelings. People often don’t realize that problems can occur from hidden emotions and by not expressing one’s true feelings internal conflicts may arise.
Many people feel they know how to communicate, however, unless you can read a person’s mind, remember it takes two people to be in a relationship and each person communicates differently. For a relationship to be effective be clear with your message when engaging in conversation.
Try some of the following techniques next time you and your partner engage in communicating to one another.
-
Choose a time and place where there can be no interruptions (i.e.children / electronics), by doing this you are showing the importance of the conversation and sending a message of that you want to build a relationship.
-
Make eye contact. Looking into the eyes of a loved one sends a clear message that you are expressing true feelings and want to engage in honest communications.
-
Be a good listener. Communication is a two way street where one talks and the other listens. During this time do not interrupt and try to understand your partner’s feelings without being judgemental.
-
Be honest; Before you can express your feelings, you have to know what they are. The old saying the truth can hurt is valid, however, being truthful to one another is vital for a strong and healthy relationship.
These four suggestions will hopefully make communicating with your partner more effective and improve your relationship with one another.
