Staying Positive in a Relationship

Notes From Dad

It is so easy to be negative when a relationship is in trouble. Blame is always the other person’s fault. However, for those who want to have a happy and satisfying relationship I suggest the opposite -stay positive!

When beginning a relationship we never find negativity as the newness forms a circle of inner happiness and joy, however, is it true, all good things must come to an end? I think not and will offer some suggestions on keeping a relationship positive.

First, have a positive mind control. If you allow someone’s negativity to affect your mood then blame no one but yourself. Your feelings are yours and yours alone; you control the thoughts and mood so don’t allow someone’s negativity to create turmoil and unhappiness.

Second, retrace your steps and focus on happier times that brought you and your partner together; such as your first kiss, your first laugh and your first hug, in other words connect events that bring about love and positive vibes.

Third, be honest with yourself. Ask yourself what is it that You want from your relationship. Too many times we blame our partner for our wants we don’t achieve and then place the blame that begins negativity Be proactive and appreciate what your partner has to offer. It is not up to them to achieve your goals, ( yes, they can be part of it) but accept what they offer and appreciate the things your partner adds to your relationship.

Fourth, spend each day giving thanks for what you do have. Accept that there will be days and situations that are difficult, however, find strength and comfort in each other’s arms and work together as a couple to try and turn a negative feeling into a positive one. As a couple learn to listen to one another and stay away from criticizing one another. Be supportive and offer advice when asked.

Finally, be respectful. A relationship built on trust and respect can be the building blocks to a long and lasting relationship. When your partner does exhibit negativity try to understand their mood by placing yourself in their shoes; by showing empathy it may help you understand and respect what they are feeling and gives you a clearer picture of how they are feeling. Remember anything worthwhile is worth working on.

Good Luck!
