Couples and Stress

Notes From Dad

Couples and Stress

Funny, as I read the title I immediately became anxious, which is a nice way to say “I am stressed”.

Stress can be a condition that has the ability to affect one’s mental, emotional and even physical psyche. Stress happens to everyone; it has the ability to change lives and even create fear in all of us. Today’s article will discuss some forms of stress and ways to handle this difficult condition when it occurs.

Before we look at some different types of stress, it's important to understand stress is not the same to everyone; some people handle stress well while others fall completely apart, hurting themselves and others who are in their lives.

Again, the following examples are only a few, stress can be unlimited; stress is different at certain ages. The stress you may feel at 12 will certainly not be true when you are 25, but for the sake of this article I will focus on three popular ones and how to handle them.

The first is being accepted by your peers. This can happen at any age; being accepted helps build a positive self-image and self-esteem; when this does not happen, you may become uneasy and travel down a road of despair.

The second is money; when is money enough, sometimes, depending on your circumstances, it never is enough. Having bills hanging over your head, being limited to participating in events that require money and not feeling you are contributing, makes this an emotional stressor. This could also affect you physically, due to the fact you may need to hold down two jobs to make ends meet.

The last one I will mention today is the loss of a loved one; losing a loved one can happen in a couple of ways, death, and break-up. In any type of relationship loss, stress will occur and may make you feel your life is not important enough to continue. So what is the answer? There are several things that can help better stress.

First, acknowledge the situation and then connect with society, family, friends and even professionals to deal with the problem. Second, focus on positive energy; surround yourself with people that will empower you and not enable; and finally take one day at a time. Use that day to take care of yourself, go to the gym, library or even out to eat.
