Couples Reflect on Relationships

I had the pleasure of speaking to several couples last weekend and the topic was about different types of relationships. There are many, yet most people I spoke to felt that there are three to four relationships that describe a couple. This article will focus on them and thank you to the folks that took the time to discuss such relationships with me.

The first type of relationship is known as friendship; such a relationship is important to us all because it provides the necessary steps in building trust, honesty and support. Friendships, as one couple noted, sometimes last longer than marriages; what is nice about this type of relationship is that it can involve many different types of people and enlighten one’s social identity and preferences.

The next relationship that was discussed, came about from a younger couple, was the sexual relationship. This type of relationship is looked upon as a safe connection, where neither person is looking for a lasting or romantic relationship. The interesting fact about this type of relationship is that outside the United States it is becoming more acceptable and couples seem to enjoy the freedom of experiencing different ideologies of sex.

Another form of friendship is one that is becoming more common and that is the open relationship. What this basically means is that two consenting adults, whether in a marriage or not, agree to date and engage in intimacy with other people. However, although this may be something that may interest you both, I would suggest engaging in some form of communication that spells out the do’s and don'ts. One more important element in this type of relationship, is at any time either one of you no longer feel comfortable, the open relationship immediately stops.

Finally, as I said earlier, there are many types of relationships, but the last one I want to discuss now is the relationship of monogamy. Monogamy is the most common type; it is built upon the premise that both partners are loyal to each other and work together as a team. They forsake others and create a life that they give totally to one another.

It’s your choice just remember that the key to any relationship is respect, trust and equal partnership.
