Why Do Couples Believe in Love

Off the shores of Cape Cod I met a lovely couple that have been together for a few years. They both had been married and one of them had recently been divorced. The divorce was a messy one and this person wondered how her ex-partner, who seemed to be so much in love with her, could be so hurtful; the question that caused her to question the belief in love. One of the partner’s explained to me that believing in love can be difficult and at times may never happen. Then the other partner warmly grabbed their partner's hands and said to me that holding one's hands gently relaxes the stress and eases emotions. The idea that a relationship can work without love is like a sailboat without sails, it has a slim chance of success. Couples that do believe in love, may have had this happen to them; Most relationships start off as friends, each day you both learn more about each other's likes/dislikes/common interests and goals in life. A relationship grows by earning respect by being there during good and bad times; gaining trust, loyalty and friend. Partners who are in such a relationship, like the couple I met, both were leery of getting into another relationship, but both felt they could count on each other and respect each other’s independence.
