The Importance of Forgiveness in a Relationship

I believe it would be fair to say that most if not all couples have disagreements and arguments. In any relationship there may come a time when both of you will not see eye to eye and sometimes actions and words are said that require forgiveness. Forgiveness, for some people, is difficult, because it is a release of anger toward a person and allows a relationship to heal and become a more positive influence in your life. Some say forgiveness could be an emotion, but really forgiveness is mainly a release of inner emotions towards a person so you both can move forward. This article will explore some positive reasons to forgive and ways to forgive.

One key element is it will improve your health; it decreases anxiety, anger and at times depression. Forgiveness is getting rid of the negativity in your life and focusing on the positive.

Another reason for forgiveness is to understand that people do make mistakes; identifying those who need forgiveness will vary, however, knowing the person can make this act easier than not being close to that person.

One more positive reason to forgive, is that it may tend to make you a better person. When showing forgiveness we are actually showing understanding to the other person; we also become a positive role model for others and learn that forgiveness comes from your heart not your mind.

Two really good ways to forgive are to recognize the pain and understand and accept that what has been said or done is in the past and can't be taken back. When recognizing the pain, you are acknowledging you are hurt and you are a victim of someone’s lack of empathy. Remember that forgiveness doesn’t mean that you forget or pardon the other person's lack of empathy, it may just mean you are willing to be a better person than them.

Finally, forgiveness is a process that may take a period of time; being a victim requires time to heal but if you are able to verbally express your hurt, the healing process will begin.

Good luck !!
